Meet Ren Lowe, an African American mompreneur who is the CEO/ Founder of Brown Unicorn Publishing. As an author of children’s books and a self-publishing coach, she earns around $7,000 per month.
Growing up, Lowe has always wished to make her childhood dream of becoming a children’s book author come true, she told Business Insider. Fast forward to when she became a mom, she thought she could achieve it while working at T-Mobile, where she started working in 2015.
Lowe officially made her start as an author when she wrote 7 children’s books with her daughter Kameryn while she was on maternity leave in 2021. However, when she was about to go back to work, she suffered from postpartum anxiety and so she had to leave her full-time job.
At that time, Lowe said what kept her afloat financially more than her savings was the passive stream of income that her books generated. Her My Magical Brown Unicorn children’s book series was selling well on Amazon, Walmart, Barnes & Noble, schools, museums, and local bookstores but she knew she can do more.
That’s when she started Royaltee Press, her own publishing company that publishes her own books. She eventually decided to expand her brand to also offer publishing services to other clients and launched Brown Unicorn Publishing.
Brown Unicorn Publishing provides services that transform their rough draft into a published book by editing, illustrating, typesetting, and formatting. Lowe also offers coaching to teach her clients the process of self-publishing so they could do it on their own. Some also avail of her ghostwriting services.
Lowe, who uses social media to market her books and services, said her hard work has so far been rewarding. Within just 9 months, she earned over $30,000 from her publishing services alone. And since she expanded her services, she has been able to earn nearly $7,000 every month.
