Billionaires are reportedly making their way toward helming the position of team owner for the NFL’s Washington Commanders franchise.
As previously reported, Commanders’ co-owners Dan and Tanya Snyder are pursuing “potential transactions” involving the team, and this could take the form of a sale or open the door for minority investors.
While the direction they will head in remains unclear, a Commanders spokesperson expressed that the team is exploring all options. Additionally, Dan and Tanya Snyder have already hired Bank of America Securities to “explore” a possible sale.
“The Snyders remain committed to the team, all of its employees and its countless fans to putting the best product on the field and continuing the work to set the gold standard for workplaces in the NFL,” the team said in the statement, according to ESPN.
Already names have been floating around expressing their interest in a potential sale, including media entrepreneur Byron Allen. Allen is currently working with an investor group, according to sources “familiar with his ambitions,” Bloomberg reports.
What’s more, Jeff Bezos and Jay-Z are also rumored to be involved in a possible partnership, according to People. This would mark the second alleged attempt from both parties as they were previously rumored to be in talks to purchase Denver Broncos, as AfroTech previously mentioned. That team was eventually sold for $4.65 billion to the Walton-Penner family, a record price for a North American sports franchise.
Fortunately, there is still hope to secure another football franchise if the Washington Commanders presents the opportunity. Bezos’ $112.8 billion fortune, as reported by Forbes, alone would put him in good standing, and adding Hip-Hop’s first billionaire to the mix, could be a smart move.
Jay-Z is heavily involved with the NFL, already contributing his voice toward social justice initiatives. He also has a say in the halftime show, which is made possible through a partnership between the NFL and Roc Nation.
Only time will tell whether Bezos is “possibly in partnership” with Jay-Z to buy the Commanders even though the rapper does have some experience when it comes to owning sports teams.
